The traditional way of authenticating users online, using passwords, is becoming increasingly insecure. Passwords can be guessed or stolen, and they are often stored in centralized databases that are vulnerable to hacks.
The DFINITY Foundation has created Internet Computer (ICP) Identity, a secure blockchain authentication system that is decentralized and tamper-proof. This makes it much more secure than traditional password-based authentication.
ICP allows you to create a unique identity that can be used to sign in to decentralized web applications. This means that you will no longer need to create different accounts and remember different passwords for DApps that you use in ICP ecosystem. Here's how to create your unique internet computer identity on PC.
Create Internet Computer Identity on Windows
Step 1: Create Desktop Security Key
If you have not set up Windows Hello security PIN on your desktop, you should set it up now.
Go to Settings of your windows. Click Accounts.
Click Sign-in options.
Click Windows Hello Pin. You can set up Windows Hello Face/Fingerprint too instead of Pin.
Enter your desktop password and click Ok.
Create your Pin and confirm it. Click Ok.
Step 2: Create Internet Computer (ICP) Identity
Visit ICP website. Click create unique identity.
Click Create PassKey.
Enter your Windows Hello Pin.
Complete Captcha and click Next.
Copy your unique Internet Computer Identity and click Continue.
Step 3: Secure your Internet Computer (ICP) Identity
Scroll down further on the next page and click Enable Recovery Phrase.
Click Create Recovery Phrase.
Store your recovery phrase and click Continue.
Traditional password-based authentication is no longer secure enough. Hackers can easily guess or steal passwords, which can lead to data breaches and identity theft. Internet Identity is a new blockchain authentication system that is more secure. It uses a decentralized ledger to store user identities, which makes it much more difficult for hackers to steal or compromise identities.
